Ways To Help Keep Your Eyes Healthy

Your eyes are a very important organ in your body that requires just as much attention and care as other organs such as your heart, lungs, or liver. You probably exercise to help stay fit or eat healthy to support good digestion, so what about your eyes, what do you do for them? In a technological age where everyone is on some sort of tech device throughout most of the day, your eyes are getting strained more than ever, requiring you to take proper care of your eyes. See below for ways and tips to help keep your eyes healthy.

Eat Healthy

Eating healthy foods can help not just your heart, kidneys, and digestion system, it can also help your eyes. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids and lutein can be beneficial to your eyes. To get more omega-3s and lutein in your diet, consider foods such as leafy green vegetables, carrots, fish, eggs, almonds, and berries.

Stop Smoking

Smoking can have a lot of side effects—risk of cancer or stroke and tooth decay/rot among them. Smoking can also be detrimental to your eye health as well. It can cause macular degeneration or even cataracts. With all of the risks smoking can cause, quitting is definitely the best answer.

Block Harmful Rays

You wear sunscreen to keep these harmful rays from damaging your skin, so why not prevent those same rays from damaging your eyes? Wearing sunglasses made to block out UVA and UVB rays can help prevent damage. Wear these sunglasses every time you go out into the sun (both in summer and winter). Wearing a wide brim hat can also help protect your eyes.

Give Your Eyes A Break

If you're constantly staring at a computer screen, looking down at your phone, or at some other type of technical device throughout the day, you need to give your eyes a break. You most likely aren't blinking while staring at these screens, meaning your eyes are losing moisture. Look away from time to time to give your eyes a break and allow your eyes to blink to give them moisture. Closing your eyes for a few minutes throughout the day will also help give them a break, or if you can, walk away from the technical device.

Get Your Eyes Checked

Go to your eye doctor often (at least once per year) to have your eyes checked by your optometrist. Don't wait until it's too late or until you have a problem to go in.

Keep your eyes healthy to prevent irreversible damage to one of the most important organs on your body. Talk to your optometrist about other things you can do to help improve your eye health.
